This is a class for students who want to explore woodworking and wish to enhance their skills and challenge themselves. Students will learn how to properly machine lumber by using power tools and machines such as jointers, planers, band saws and table saws. Required and elective projects will be made. As students advance, they will focus on learning the terminology necessary to use power tools and machines successfully, developing skills to safely use these tools in the workshop and becoming familiar with various kinds of wood-finishing materials. Students will learn project layout, prepare bill of materials, cut lists, assembly, and finishing techniques. Safety glasses are required. Material fees may be required.
Objectives
The student will:
1) List 10 Businesses in the area that would hire a worker with woodworking skills.
2) Identify various types of wood and its best uses.
3) Identify sheet goods and their benefits in the woodworking industry.
4) Read and interpret a drawing of a project plan.
5) Use both fractional and metric measurement.
6) Use math formulas to calculate board feet and area in material estimates.
7) Fill out a Bill of Material and calculate the cost of each project.
8) Use the 8 proper steps to machine a board for use in a project.
9) Learn woodworking hand tool techniques and use them safely.
10) Use woodworking machines to prepare wood materials for projects in a safe manner.
11) Learn methods to fasten and join wood together to create projects.
12) Learn wood gluing, sanding and finishing techniques.
13) Use craftsmanship in the design, building and completion of each project.
