This is a class for students who want to explore our Natural Resources and the great outdoors. We will spend a great deal of time learning how to use topographical maps and compasses to find our way in the wilderness. These skills will allow you to venture off the beaten path and to really enjoy the beautiful natural environment around you without the fear of getting lost. You will be able to go beyond with confidence where most people turn back from fear. We will also study various animal types that live around us and learn how to protect them but still use them as a resource.
Objectives
The student will:
1) List 10 Businesses in the area that would hire a worker with wildlife management skills.
2) Be able to explain how man interacts with the natural environment both positive and negative.
3) Be able to read and interrupt a topographical map.
4) Know the 16 cardinal directions on a compass.
5) Be able to use a compass to determine direction.
6) Be able to use a topographical map and a compass to determine a bearing to find ones way.
7) Measure and score a set of antlers.
8) Be able to identify the mating stages of the whitetail deer and why they occur.
9) Locate the major glands on a whitetail deer and explain their function.
10) Be able to identify our upland game birds.
11) Know what to look for when identifying waterfowl.
12) Be able to plan a wilderness trip.
13) Be able to explain the importance of our National Parks System.
